Gaining Weight But Hardly Eating
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have persistant depression since i was 14, now in my 50's. My husband passed away suddenly three years ago and i found him. Since then i received treatment for ptsd and anxiety on top of depression. I find myself buying food and not eating any of it, i am constantly throwing veg and fresh dairy in bin. I cant afford ready meals but basic food prep is too hard. Im gaining weight as will eat nothing all day then gorge on a giant bar of chocolate, i now live alone so cooking is a chore not a… read more

have you tried pre-cooking anything to heat up so it's a one time task instead of a aily task, things like rice or patatoes?

Hi there. After finding myself living alone after a 17 year marriage breakdown, feeding myself is one of the things I struggled with. How to buy food for one and then finding the energy to try to cook a meal. Very similar to what you're saying. Buying fresh and throwing away. As I've picked myself up a bit recently, and put a lot more thought into it I've began this. I make smoothies every day. Avocados keep well in the fridge and I buy ready to eat salad stuff such as curly kale, spinach, broccoli and freeze them. They can go straight in smoothies from the freezer. Look into smoothies and recipes. They're an excellent way to get good day nutrition. Also I've began cooking a curry, and a bolognese and maybe a chilli all at the same time. Putting into pots and freezing them. Takes an hour or so to Cook them all and then I have quite a few meals ready to go for days, and is much cheaper than ready meals. Just have to think about, right tomorrow I'll have a chilli for tea. Get one out the freezer and put in fridge to thaw for next day. Also eggs are very good for you and very quick and easy to prepare. Scrambled, poached, soft boiled, hard boiled etc. I like scrambled on toast with some tinned tomatoes. Takes 10 minutes and very good breakfast right there.
I know just how hard it can be to get motivated to do just simple tasks. I've been there. I've had days when there's been no clean pots in the house, so just didn't eat those days. And it just gets worse, I know.
But when you take a positive step to do some of the things I've suggested, it can make you feel so good, know you've done something good for yourself. I really hope you find this helpful.

Loss of oneself. My husband died last March after a 6 year stint with cancer and then emphysema. I hardly reconize myself anymore. But there are small bits I see of myself now and then..which may be causing my anxiety. Am not sure..or seeing my daughter's after. .months..it's like I don't know them at all. They look like my kids but..not sure. The suns out today and that helps me with my moods. Your not alone cause we are all here 😃

Believe it or not---- you aren't eating enough calories... Your body is in starvation mode and is hanging onto every bit of food you ingest.... Try to eat throughout the day----- even if it's a breakfast bar or snack of some sort... 4-6 times a day. You will probably feel better as well, because you are fueling your body more often. Hugs to you both...

I keep frozen veggies on hand and when I can make myself cook I'll mix some in a kettle with a can of soup and heat it up. I have a hard time with prep work and things that take a long time to cook. I make protein shakes with plain whey protein powder with a small amount sugar and cinnamon to get rid of the yuck taste. Other than that I eat bread with real butter, apples and other fruit, with coffee or tea. I drink about 32 oz of water a day.
