Dissociative Disorder
A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone else have Dissociative Disorder? If so, what do you find brings you back when you feel yourself dissociating?
I'm often aware it's happening but I really struggle to bring myself back into focus.

Have you heard of grounding techniques? I totally know what you're talking about, although I've never been diagnosed with full blown dissociative disorder I do have PTSD. The key I think is to notice when it's first starting, and when you feel your mind blanking out, find something physical that you can touch and focus on completely. Like, I keep a few interesting objects in my pockets that I can grab and focus on their texture, look, make a noise with, then I notice the smells around me and my breath and just try to stay focused on the present. It takes practice, so try sometimes when you're just feeling a bit stressed or out of sorts too. I started practicing with that about two years ago and haven't felt really dissociated in months.

Thank you that's actually a really good idea! I'll have to find something that I can carry around with me. I've heard of people using this technique for things like autism and ADD but I never thought to apply it to this.

No, for me it's completely involuntary. It can be almost like an out of body experience.
It's different for each individual but for me I zone out, all my senses feel like they're shrouded and murky and nothing processes in my mind.
It's almost like a black out but you're awake.

Yes at times I do feel like I’m not even in my own body totally disconnected to what’s going on around me. I also have certain objects that kinda bring me lots of comfort and keep me grounded as well.
